BIOGRAPHY

Painting to me is not a slavish representation of reality it is about interpretation and it is about using paint and colour to bring my own ideas and thoughts to life. This journey of mine will last a lifetime, and each painting represents one small step forward and each week brings a new discovery of some sort, and in this sense it is more of an adventure than an orderly progression.
I first picked up a brush as a teenager, messing about with my Mother’s oil paints.

Over the years I painted whenever I could find time while earning a living, but eventually I reached the point where I was determined to concentrate on developing my craft.

I went to Heatherley’s art school in London to study portrait painting full time and after two years set off on the next stage of my artistic journey.

There is no doubt that two years of intense observational painting and drawing from life and the support of enthusiastic staff and fellow students is a fabulous way to get to grips with how to make paint and composition work for you, and it is a grounding that can be applied to any subject be it in a figurative sense or with abstract work.

Painting is like life; the more you experience it, the more you realize you have so much more to learn. What started out as a simple weekend pleasure became an obsession and turned into a journey, and for me new commissions often create fresh pathways.

I love the texture of the paint, the richness of colour and the subtle ways that pigments interact with each other. Painting from life creates its own rewards in the look and feel of the work, but exploring the juxtaposition of shapes and colours in abstraction is intensely satisfying.  In painting one is always looking, and looking and looking again, until you see the essence and character of your subject.  The journey continues!
